Built for nature

Naturefy was founded by Jim Day out of a genuine passion for the natural environment and a belief that the UK has a unique opportunity to lead the world in ecological restoration.

Through creating and managing private nature reserves, Jim has seen first-hand the difference that dedicated land stewardship can make. But it also became clear that meaningful change at a national level requires more than individual action, it requires a political and economic system that properly values and supports nature.

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a powerful step in that direction. It has the potential to transform how development and nature coexist, putting the UK at the forefront of environmental policy. But today, the market is still evolving, fragmented, complex, and often difficult to navigate for both landowners and developers.

Naturefy exists to change that.

We are building the infrastructure to make the BNG market more transparent, accessible, and effective, helping landowners bring forward biodiversity projects, and enabling developers to find the right solutions with confidence. By improving how the market functions, we aim to encourage greater participation, connect the right people more easily, and ultimately deliver better outcomes for nature.

That’s why, at this stage, we do not charge for our services. Our focus is on making the market work. Because if BNG succeeds, it creates a scalable, long-term mechanism for restoring biodiversity across the UK.

Naturefy is Jim’s way of helping make that happen, scaling impact beyond individual projects and contributing to a future where development leaves nature in a better state than before.

BNG – common questions

What is Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)?
Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a UK requirement that most developments deliver at least a 10% measurable improvement in biodiversity compared to the pre-development state. Naturefy's tools help you calculate and plan your BNG strategy in line with the Environment Act 2021 and Defra's biodiversity metric.
Can I use Naturefy to create Biodiversity Units?
Yes. Naturefy makes it easy for Landowners to convert their land into Biodiversity Units. Using our tool, landowners and farmers can experiment to see how many units their land can create and then we'll provide you with the necessary documents for free, then walk you through the steps to create these units.
Can I do the Small Site Metric here?
Yes. If your development is under 1 hectare or 1–9 dwellings and has no priority habitats, you can map your site and Naturefy will auto-populate the Small Site Metric for you — and you can download it for planning.
How do I create the Biodiversity Gain Plan?
After you map habitats and run the calculator, open the Biodiversity Gain Plan Tool. It will pull in your habitats, unit calculations and survey results, then generate a compliant, planning-ready PDF.
Can I check priority habitats and designated sites automatically?
Yes. Use the Biodiversity Survey Tool to scan your redline and nearby area for priority habitats and designated sites. Naturefy will show sources and IDs you can reference in your planning documents.
Does Naturefy charge fees for buying or selling BNG units?
No. Naturefy charges a 0% fee on buying and selling BNG units. Advertising your available biodiversity units on our marketplace is completely free.
Can buyers and sellers communicate directly?
Yes. Naturefy allows providers to add their website and contact details directly to their listings. You can negotiate and communicate directly with the buyer or seller without having to go through us.
How do I manage a site that is already registered with Natural England?
Naturefy automatically imports sites registered with Natural England. You can claim ownership of your registered site on our platform to manage the listing, add your direct contact details, and advertise your units.
How can I find specific BNG units for my development?
Use the free interactive map on our Provider Map page. You can easily search and filter available units by price, National Character Area (NCA), Local Planning Authority (LPA), and specific Habitat Types.
Is Naturefy free?
Yes. The online tools — calculator, gain plan, survey, and marketplace — are free to use.
