Our FAQ

The most common questions we get asked.

What is Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)?
Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a UK government policy that requires most developments to deliver at least a 10% measurable improvement in biodiversity compared to the pre-development state. This is achieved by creating, enhancing, or restoring habitats, either on-site (within the development area) or off-site (on other land). Naturefy’s tools help you calculate and plan your BNG strategy in line with the Environment Act 2021 and Defra’s biodiversity metric.
Who needs to comply with BNG requirements?
In England, BNG is mandatory for most planning applications from 2024 onwards. This applies to housing developments, infrastructure projects, and land management changes, unless specifically exempt. If you are a developer, land manager, planner, or environmental consultant, you will likely need to demonstrate compliance using the Biodiversity Metric Calculation tool.
Who is the Naturefy tool for?
  • Small Sites – Developments under 1 hectare or with 1–9 dwellings, using the Small Site Metric for a simplified biodiversity calculation.
  • Landlords and Landowners – Create the off-site section of the Biodiversity Metric to market your land for biodiversity units.
  • Developers of Large or Complex Sites – Plan and manage sites with multiple habitats, using the full Defra Biodiversity Metric to meet legal and planning requirements.

Whether you’re a developer, landowner, or managing a large-scale project, Naturefy helps you map habitats, calculate biodiversity units, and prepare planning-compliant reports.

What is the Small Site Metric tool?
The Small Site Metric is a simplified biodiversity calculation method for residential developments with fewer than 10 units, a total site area under 1 hectare, and no priority habitats or European protected species present on the site.
Is Naturefy suitable for landowners who want to sell biodiversity units?
Yes. If you have land suitable for enhancement, Naturefy can help you view your enhancement options and download ready Biodiversity Metric Calculation tool.
Can I purchase biodiversity credits (BNG) via Naturefy?
Yes. You can purchase biodiversity credits through Naturefy. To arrange a purchase, please contact us directly at admin@naturefy.co.uk.
